A showing of Landscape, Maps and History, a 30-minute film illustrating the use of large-scale British Ordnance Survey maps in historical research. The film will be followed by a panel discussion led by our speakers.

October’s meeting promises to be especially stimulating to all who followed the Vinland Map controversy. If you remember, the Vinland Map hit the headlines shortly before Columbus Day, 1965, as the only known map showing any part of America before Columbus’s voyages. Doubt was cast on its authenticity especially after a microscopic analysis of the ink by Walter C. McCrone Associates, a Chicago firm of microscopists. The controversy rages on.

The normal lecture meeting for May has been cancelled and will be replaced by a special dinner meeting to be held at the Bakery Restaurant, 2218 North Lincoln Avenue, Chicago. The evening will include an exhibition of maps of Hungary and Japan from Chef Szathmary’s collection.

A field trip to view the collection of Art Holzheimer. Art has an exceptional collection of early world maps. David Woodward and Bob Karrow will give an informal background talk on the collection.
